| Remote Access: Security Solutions |
|
The biggest concern when it comes to allowing employees to remotely access the business network is security. While increased productivity is one of the biggest attractions, allowing access from home computers, mobile devices, kiosks and other end points can create a number of security risks. Regardless of which remote-access solution you use, we have a list of tips to help keep your connections secure.
1. Consider beefing up your VPN with additional gear such as firewalls, software, and dedicated VPN concentrators to create added layers of security.
2. Consider developing policies to allow or deny end users remote access based on the access point, whether the user has up-to-date virus protection, anti-spyware, a personal firewall and other security features.
3. Implement endpoint-checking software on remote computers. Before each connection it will insure that the machine complies with security standards.
4. Adopt a public key infrastructure (PKI) which utilizes a pair of keys (public and private) to generate digital certificates of authority. It confirms both the user and the information they are allowed to access.
5. Make sure all users have strong passwords that are not stored on their computers (users should never set their computers to logon automatically).
6. Remove remote-access privileges for a user as soon as they are no longer needed.
7. Regularly monitor and test remote access.
8. Avoid using public computers.
With a layered security system, effective security controls and management, and enforced policies regarding end user compliance, companies can ensure a safe network environment. Allowing employees to connect remotely means they are no longer accessing the network from inside the safety of the corporate firewall. However, by identifying potential risks and mitigating them through increased management and added security features, your business can reap the benefits of a mobile workplace.
