Selecting the Perfect Projector
Not all projectors are created equal. Like selecting a monitor or even a television, the differences in a few specs can mean the difference between seeing sharp, clear images and dim, fuzzy ones. Before you purchase your next projector, consider the specifications we’ve outlined below in conjunction with how you plan to utilize your projector to insure the best presentation possible.
Resolution
Like a computer monitor, resolution is vital to clarity. The resolution tells you the density or number of pixels your projector will display on the screen. The higher the resolution, the better the image. A VGA resolution of 640x480 is considered low, whereas a UXGA resolution of 1600x1280 is considered high. If you intend to connect your projector to your laptop, be sure that the resolution of the projector is at least as high as the laptop. Most laptops today offer at least 1024x768 – your projector should offer the same or higher.
Brightness/Luminosity
The brightness is measured using the standard ANSI lumens and determines the amount of light that will be projected onto the screen. Many factors can effect the lumens needed to produce a quality image. For example, how much light you have in the room, the distance from the screen, as well as the size of the screen can require different degrees of brightness. Typically for larger screens, brighter lighting conditions and sizable distances between the screen and the projector, you’ll need at least 1000 ANSI lumens. But be sure to consult with your representative regarding the conditions for use to determine the best luminosity to fit your needs.
Connections
Will you be utilizing your projector only in a conference room, or will you be taking it to off-site meetings? For mobility, be sure that the projector offers compatible connectivity with your laptop.
Size
These days you’ll find every size of projector from large overheads to something not much bigger than an iPod. Of course, what you need depends entirely on how you intend to utilize it. For solely mobile use, there are several new mini-projectors on the market that offer unbeatable performance and a compact size, which makes it great for lugging it through the airport. It also allows you to make a presentation anywhere – even the local coffee shop. For use only in a conference room setting, size is less of a consideration. Although, there are many medium-size projectors which offer light weight in exchange for quality resolution and brightness. For additional information on the variety of projectors available, check out "Advancements in Projectors."
Screen
Regardless of how good your projector is, a bad screen can ruin your image quality. Similar features apply to screens – higher resolution is better as well as higher quality brightness/reflectivity. In addition, be sure your projector’s contrast meshes with the contrast of the screen. Some also offer better color accuracy and performance as well conveniences for easy setup and installation.
