VoIP: The Migration
You’ve done the research, considered the pros and cons of VoIP and determined that it’s the best telephony solution for your business. Now, where do you begin? We’ve compiled a checklist to get you started.

1. Develop a migration strategy
Define your goals, address any concerns, and formulate a clear plan to implement your vision across all avenues of your business.

2. Determine the best VoIP options
Should you implement a hybrid solution or migrate to a dedicated VoIP system? Should you start with a test pilot location or perform a company-wide deployment? And, finally, should you utilize an in-house network and IT staff to deploy, manage and maintain your system or outsource it?

3. Take inventory
If you elect to manage the VoIP system in-house, do a complete inventory of your existing network equipment. Optimizing what you already have will save initial costs.

4. Setting up your network
When upgrading your system to handle VoIP, utilize best-of-breed hardware, ensure that your network is robust enough to handle both voice and data traffic, and consider all potential security risks.

5. Setup a pilot location
Start with a single pilot location (other than company headquarters) to test your system.

6. Setup a migration to other locations
Migrate your VoIP to main headquarters. Then determine a regional deployment strategy.

7. Training
To get the most value for your investment, take advantage of all the functions and features voice over IP has to offer by providing training to all end users.

8. Maintenance
Unlike traditional phone systems, VoIP requires ongoing management. Continue to monitor your network for voice quality. Implement upgrades and be aware of new functionality and enhanced features that could benefit your business.
